My summary of the book
Daniel and his family are moving to the West Virginian wilderness of Woodville. When they’re finally settling in, a boy named Brody tells Daniel and his sister, Erica, a spooky story about their house. A girl named Selene disappeared 50 years before at the hands of a ghost witch named Old Auntie. Daniel doesn’t believe a word Brody says, but soon, strange things start happening. Erica always wants to be alone with her doll Little Erica, who has terrible secrets. Soon, Erica and her doll disappear. Daniel thinks that maybe the kids are right. Will Daniel save his sister?
My thoughts
I’ve read both the graphic novel and the book. Each is different; the graphic novel switched a bit of event around, while the book had more physical descriptions of the characters.
The story was unique and emotional. It’s a traditional ghost story with all the right ingredients. I would say I prefer the graphic novel to the book because it’s rare to find horror fiction in graphic novels for kids.
When brainstorming to write some story ideas, I had the concept of inventing a ghost-witch. I guess Mary Downing Hahn was the first to do it.
