My brief summary of the book
Nisha, a 12 years-old girl, her twin brother, her father, and her grandmother must move from Pakistan to India because their lives are in danger since India has been newly independent of the British.
Her mother died giving birth to Nisha and her brother. She writes letters to her mom in her diary to connect with her and tell her journey. Will they make their journey to India safely?
My thoughts
I felt my stomach twist because she had to brave all the dangers and left everything she knew and loved. I learned a lot about Pakistan /India’s history. I like that it is written with compassion and the description of the food makes me really want to eat it—unfortunate parts but heartwarming parts too.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes the history of Pakistan and India or who is interested in Malala or Gandhi etc.
Fun fact: I am American but raised in European culture, and I love to eat different kinds of food. I was drooling all the book by the description of the Pakistan/Indian food.
My rating
I rated it as 4 stars because the beginning was a little bit slow.
