A shadow witch/godborn must put ancient Aztec gods to sleep before they wreak havoc on the world.
Renata Santiago, or Ren, hears an abnormal report from a commenter about an alien sighting. Ren knows that is no ordinary sighting; it could be a new plot formed by the evil Cinco (a group of five godborns who want to overthrow the Mayan gods). Ren soon finds that she must stop the Cinco from waking up the Nine Aztec Lords of the Night before it’s too late. With the help of Monty, a hunter, and Edison, a demon, Ren finds that getting this quest done is no easy task.
This book is the first one in a series tied to the Storm Runner series. I didn’t read the other series, so I had a little trouble following the plot.
The ending was, albeit unfair, and I was outraged.
I liked that it gave me more background on Mayan gods. I found many elements from previous readings about Mexican folklore.
Ren, the main character, is into aliens, and I’m also interested in aliens. She is a good leader and has awe-inspiring powers. Those shadows she makes sound pretty scary.
The theme of The Lords of the Night is to keep going and protect each other at all costs. I recommend this book to the Storm Runner series fans.

About the author
“J. C. Cervantes (www.jccervantes.com) grew up in San Diego and was fascinated by stories about Maya gods and magic as a child. Those tales inspired her to write a best-selling middle-grade fantasy trilogy about children of Maya and Aztec gods for Rick Riordan Presents: The Storm Runner, The Fire Keeper, and The Shadow Crosser, two of which featured Ren as a main character. Jen’s short story “The Cave of Doom” in the best-selling The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities anthology also ties into this book. For more work by J. C. Cervantes, look for her YA rom-com, Flirting with Fate, and her entry in the YA fiction series The Mirror: Fractured Path.” – Book Depository.
