Four women have separate ambitions, and the unexpected comes to each of them.

Olivia Davenport is the oldest daughter of one of the few wealthy Black families, the Davenports. Her parents expect her to marry a wealthy man named Jacob Laurance. However, when she meets a civil rights activist leader, Washington DeWight, her perspective on the world changes drastically. Meanwhile, her younger sister, Helen, isn’t interested in high societal expectations and instead wants to fix cars, a new skill introduced at that time. However, everything changes when Helen falls in love with Jacob Laurance. Ruby Tremaine, a family friend of the Davenports, has her sights set on John, the eldest son of the Davenports. She schemes to win his heart with her family’s encouragement, but her plan takes an unexpected turn. Lastly, Amy-Rose, a servant of the Davenports, is in love with John and dreams of opening a hair salon.

Step back to 1910 in Chicago, Illinois, with this captivating book. As someone born in nearby Naperville, it was fun to read a story set in the place. Against a society plagued by Jim Crow laws, this book tells a story of love and its challenges in high society. The characters are masterfully crafted, each possessing a unique voice and personality that makes it easy to become fully invested in their stories. The depth and complexity of the characters add an extra layer of realism to the already vivid setting, making it a truly immersive reading experience.

Olivia is a brave young woman who isn’t afraid to fight for what’s right. DeWight is a fascinating character with hidden depths. Helen is a quirky tomboy who is easy to admire, while Jacob is a charismatic gentleman who adds an extra layer of intrigue. Ruby is an intelligent and well-written character who leaves a lasting impression, and John is as handsome as he is charming. Finally, Amy-Rose is an intelligent and driven individual who always keeps her eye on the prize.

This book is a must-read if you love romance with a historical twist. The story is captivating, the characters are well-developed, and the setting is immersive. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable read and its upcoming sequel in November of 2024.
