Will Celine find the murderer on the loose?
Celine Rousseau, a seventeen-year-old lady, flees her life as a dressmaker in Paris to New Orleans because she had murdered a man in self-defense. Celine and her friend, Pippa, whom she met on her voyage, are taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline Convent to live a more righteous life. Almost immediately, a string of murders begins, and some of them may not seem coincidental.
This intriguing novel, set in 1872 in New Orleans, gave me a deep understanding of life at that time. One of the aspects I appreciated most was the inclusion of French words, which added an extra layer of authenticity to the story. Interestingly, during a ghost tour in New Orleans, I had the opportunity to see the very convent mentioned in the book.
The enigmatic Celine was a captivating character who often kept her innermost thoughts concealed. In contrast, Pippa stood out as a devoted friend with an endearing personality. Meanwhile, Sebastion, a member of the Cour des Lions, exuded an air of mystery and unease.
This book is a perfect choice for those who enjoy a compelling blend of murder mystery, historical narrative, and fantastical elements.
