An adventurous story about a girl who is a slayer-in-training trying to stop an adze (African mythological vampire) from taking over her new school.

Serwa Boateng, daughter of one of the two most potent adze slayers, has always lived her life training to become just like her parents. But one day, her life was shattered as Boahinmma, an obayifo (vampire witch), tried to force information out of Serwa’s parents about the Midnight Drum. After barely making it out alive, Serwa’s parents placed Serwa under the care of her Aunt Latrica and her cousin Roxy in boring Rocky Gorge, Maryland. 7th grade is hard for Serwa, but an adze lingers in the school. To defeat the adze, Serwa must train Roxy and some other friends, Mateo, Gavin, and Eunju.

This book is a plot-twist rollercoaster. The twists and turns of the story were fun to read. I learned more about Ghanaian culture and mythology. I love learning about new kinds of vampires since I’m intrigued by them.

Serwa was a fun and intelligent character. She is a natural-born leader and is good at making strategies. Roxy is a cute character. She is a good friend and an avid believer in the supernatural.

The theme of Serwa Boateng’s Guide to Vampire Hunting is to keep going until you reach your goal. I recommend this book to African Mythology enthusiasts, and a good MG adventure.

My rating

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
