My summary of the book

Annie Browne had just moved into Mount Pleasant near Baltimore, leaving everything behind. On her first day, Annie makes friends with a lonely girl named Elsie Schneider. Elsie turns out to be a tattletale and a liar. So, when Elsie was sick, Annie hung out with the other girls in the class. Soon after, Elise dies of Influenza in the epidemic of 1918. Annie thinks she is safe, but her troubles with Elsie are not over. Elsie returns from the dead to take revenge on Annie and her friends.

My thoughts

I’m a huge fan of Mary Downing Hahn’s novels. The story was a good mix of Horror fiction and Historical fiction. I learned what it was like living in America during the last year of WWI and the epidemic. I was not too fond of Annie’s attitude to Elise when she was alive. Elise was a tragic character. She never knew the love of a mother and friends.

The whole story is about the true meaning of friendship.

My rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.
