A heartwarming and moving story of a girl with Osteogenesis Imperfecta waiting for her time to shine.
Olive is tired of homeschooling and yearns to go to school to make new friends. She is also sick of being called fragile when she wants to be more than that. Her parents finally agreed to let her go to Macklemore Middle School; it was a dream come true. In there, she hears a legend of a magical hummingbird that could grant wishes, and it comes on a blue moon. Will Olive finally get her wish to happen and shine in the limelight?
Macklemore Middle School was described more like a palace than a school. It had a great library with many books (I wish I could wander along those bookshelves). The teachers also sounded nice. The legend was very intriguing, and I wondered throughout the book if it was real.
Olive is a passionate girl with much to learn about middle school life. She was charming and likable and was an excellent playwright and poet. Nothing could stop her, not even her brittle bone disease.
I’ve read many books, and this one has one of the best endings.
At the end of the story, the author tells us that she has osteogenesis imperfecta like Olive. The connection between the two was very sweet.
The theme of Hummingbird is to stand out and inspire hope, even if you have to overcome a challenge yourself. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a passionate and heartwarming story.
