The book Chains is the first read in The Seeds of America Trilogy.

“The Seeds of America trilogy that shows the lengths we can go to cast off our chains, both physical and spiritual.”

It is a great historical fiction about the Revolutionary war of two enslaved sisters searching for their freedom.

Isabel and Ruth, thirteen-year-old and five-year-old African American slave sisters might be free from their enslavement after the death of their mistress. But when things go to a different turn, a relative of their mistress sells them to the loyalist Locktons. At the end of their voyage from Rhode Island to New York, Isabel meets a Patriot slave boy named Curzon. He asked Isabel to help the Patriots by spying on Mr. Lockton. Will Isabel find the willpower of their freedom and allow the Patriots to free themselves from the British Empire?

I loved the book Fever by Mrs. Anderson, so I was willing to try this one. The book needed to be faster at the beginning. There were good descriptions of America during the early years of the American Revolution. There were exciting bits about the food they ate at the time. I was appalled by the punishments of the enslaved people at the time; it was inhuman to do that to people.

I loved the protagonist, Isabel, who was brave and a bit humorous if anyone could spy on Lockton, it sits Isabel.

My rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.
