My summary of the book

Penelope or Peppi Torres begins her first day at Berrybrook middle school. Her rule #1 of middle school is to avoid getting noticed by the mean kids, which failed when she bumps into a boy named Jaime Thompson. The mean kids had called her “Nerder Girlfriend.” She had pushed him away when Jamie tried to help her and felt guilty about it. Her rule #2 of middle school is to join clubs. But the Art Club goes to World War III with their archrival, the Science Club, to get a table at the school fair. Jaime and Peppi must get their clubs to stop fighting and set aside their differences to get to the table at this fair.

My thoughts

Awkward is an excellent graphic novel to read, especially if you are entering middle school. In my opinion, Middle school is the awkwardest place in the world.

The story is about teamwork, friendship, and surviving middle school! The characters were humorous, especially Jansen (an Art Club kid), the boy who is always worried about sunspots. I loved the fun pastel manga style because it sets a fun and cozy vibe.

My rating

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
