A wild mustang horse must return to his “home waters.”
Sky, a young wild mustang, had always lived a good life with his mother, his best friend, Storm, the other mares (female horses), and their stallion (male horse and the “alpha” of the group). However, Sky believed his only strength was speed. And he needed to beat his stallion to stay with his band. So, he decided to leave the band. Disaster struck, and Sky is captured by the humans and sent to work as a messenger horse in the Pony Express. Sky must find a way to race for freedom and return with his herd.
After A Wolf Called Wander and A Whale of the Wild, Rosanne Parry offers us another gripping animal survival story with wild horses this time.
The story is told from Sky’s perspective, and you can only feel for him.
This book takes place in 1860, Nevada. Although it might not look like Historical fiction, there were some little hidden historical tidbits in this book. I learned about horses, how their bands work, and their habitats.
Sky is a very stubborn and determined character. He was also very courageous in the face of danger. Storm was a tomboy mare. She is pretty fierce.
The black-and-white illustrations are excellent, and there is a map too.
Give this book to animal lovers who love stories about survival and family bonds with twists and turns.
