My brief summary of the book

One snowy day in Patterfall, the kids are running away from the legendary ice monster. But it was a piper (someone with the ability to do magic with songs) named Patch Brightwater. The people wanted a piper to clear away the rat infestations. So, Patch seemed like an angel sent from heaven. Patch tried to clear the rats with a simple song, but it didn’t work. So, Patch had to do Dance (the illegal song performed by the Pied Piper of Hamelin) to clear the rats. Unfortunately, the piper’s council caught Patch and sent him to jail. Will Patch escape and reveal the truth of what happened to the piper?

My thoughts

This book is an excellent retelling of The Pied Piper of Hamelin legend.

I knew that tale, so I was interested in this book. It felt like walking into a magical world where dragons, pipers, and other mystical things exist. It had a good description of the destinations the heroes went to, as well. The idea of adapting a Medieval tale into making it a world is genius. Well done, Mr. Patrick!

My rating

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

About the author

“Seth Alan Patrick was born in Belfast. When he was a child, he wanted to write video games, become an author, and have magical powers. The first two came true. If he ever does get magical powers, he hopes people like dragons and griffins because there’ll suddenly be a lot of them around. A Darkening of Dragons is his first book for children.” – Book Depository.
